Measuring Friction

In science this term we are looking at forces. This week we did an experiment looking at how friction affects a car on different surfaces. 

Improving our sentences

Today, in English, we talked about using conjunctions and connectives to join together or extend our sentences. We practised using some of the words in the list below. Some are rather tricky so please help us to look out for them at home. The green ones are the ones we need to know!

Time Travellers

To begin our History Topic, Ancient Egypt, we begun by looking at the ways in which the river Nile is used today. We then looked at some sources from Ancient Egypt to see how important the river was over 4000 years ago.

The uses were surprisingly similar! 

We also  talked about the annual flooding of the river using a model.

Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians had their own ways to access the water, when the river was not at it's highest? We made model shadufs, just like they might have used, but with different materials!

The Great BGS Time Off

We have done some work on telling the time in Maths this term, but it is a really tricky skill and the more you practice, the better you get.


So, Miss Durkin and I have created some fun  tasks to help the children practise at home. These tasks are not compulsory, and do not need to be brought in to school. However, completing even a few would be helpful.


The children have been given paper copies of this task.

Handwriting

This term we have been practising our first join and also thinking about the size of our letters.


We have used this paper to help us. As you can see, most letters fit in between the blue lines, tall letters (ascenders) reach up to the top red line and low letters (descenders) reach down to the bottom red line.

The first join is a diagonal join from the bottom of a letter to the top of a letter without an ascender.


Here are some examples.

ed is a slightly funny one, as d does have an ascender (tall bit), but we join to the curve of the d, so it still comes in the category of first join.










The children are very keen to practise these joins so please feel free to support with this at home.


Please note that we do not teach children to join b, g, j, p, q, x, y and z
